 Position Title:      Heavy Equipment Operator I

Department:        Landfill

 Nature of Work: SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION. Operate moderately complex type of heavy construction equipment, i.e.; compactors, bulldozer, twin-engine scrapers, rubber tired front end loaders, motor grader and mowing equipment.  Work will be to move, compact and bury the off-loaded solid waste as it is delivered to the landfill on a daily basis.  Also will excavate, fill, compact and move direct and other materials, remove snow, operator trucks and trailers to haul solid waste from the multipurpose building to the landfill working face.  See job description for further details.

 Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and one year previous experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment.  Valid State operator’s license required.  Special consideration for Waste Screen Certificate.  Will consider equivalent combination of education and experience.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of traffic laws and ordinances, skilled in safe, efficient operation of at least one type of heavy mobile equipment.  Ability to perform manual labor involving bending, lifting, carrying and other similar motions; carry out routine oral and written instruction, fill out worksheets and maintain records on equipment.  Working knowledge in the operation of road construction and earth moving equipment. 

Location and Hours of Work: Sarpy County Landfill, 14414 S. 156th Street, Springfield, NE 68059.  The landfill is open seven (7) days a week. Full-time position.  Days and hours scheduled to work will be determined.

Starting Salary: $16.716 per hour.

Supervision:  This position works under the direction of the Sarpy County Director of Environmental Control or their designee.

GENERAL PURPOSE  

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION.  Performs semi-skilled tasks and operates a variety of equipment in order to maintain and provide an efficient and safe landfill site.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Landfill Foreman or Landfill Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates heavy equipment to assure the facility is properly maintained.
  • Moves, compacts and buries the off-loaded solid waste as it is delivered to the landfill on a daily basis.
  • Excavates, fills, compacts and moves direct and other materials, removes snow, operates trucks and trailers to haul solid waste from the multipurpose building to the landfill working face.
  • Repairs road surfaces to assure and provide a safe and efficient highway system.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security and landfill operations standards.
  • Assists in the maintenance and upkeep of the landfill site, including litter removal.
  • Will be trained to perform random load inspections.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

  • Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.
  • Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

(A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and

(B) Minimum one year previous experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment.   

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

(A) Working knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations; working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in street and utility maintenance work.

(B) Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.; skill in maneuvering heavy equipment in traffic.

(C) Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to observe proper safety precautions; Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public; Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions; Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions; Ability to follow and abide by traffic laws; Ability to work from construction specifications or blueprints; Ability to identify soils used in landfill operations.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid State operator's license and/or CDL license, or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.  

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Must be able to operate heavy earth moving equipment, mowing tractors, front-end loader, dozer, excavators, back hoes, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, saws, compressors, generators, pumps, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone.
